About Husthwaite

Set in the spacious countryside between the Hambleton and Howardian Hills, the attractive village of Husthwaite stands on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. It is a pleasant place where the pace of life is un-hurried and the locals can always find time to nod in greeting and exchange a few words with you. The charm of Husthwaite is largely due to the surrounding landscape which is a patchwork of sweet meadows grazed by fat cattle and sheep, ancient farmsteads, hedgerows full of wild plants and flowers, and sparkling little streams.

Years ago this celebrated area had many fruit orchards, almost every house had land planted with fruit trees and bushes. Thus, this is the reason why Husthwaite is billed as 'The Orchard Village of North Yorkshire' even though today, the orchards number but a few. Central to the village is the lovely Norman church built in the 12th-century. The church of St. Nicholas retains many of its fine Norman features and is the oldest building in Husthwaite. In the quiet churchyard there are impressive ancient gravestones and a memorial to the villagers who lost their lives in World War I and II.

Close to the village is Beacon Bank where a beacon was lit during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I to warn of the approaching Spanish Armada.

Lying in close proximity to all the beauty of the Moors beneath the White Horse of Kilburn, Husthwaite makes an ideal resort village from which to explore the Hambleton Hills, lovely Bilsdale and other glories of North Yorkshire. Interestingly, it is close to 15th-century Shandy Hall, where in 1760, eccentric parson Lawrence Sterne wrote Tristan Shandy and A Sentimental Journey. The house is open to public view and holds an exceptional collection of Sterne's novels, together with other memorabilia surrounding his work, life and times.
